Malvern Exhibition of Contemporary Art

Paul Johnson

Golden Gears

Paul Johnson has recently completed an MA in Fine Art at Birmingham Institute of Art and Design. He lives and works in Worcester. This is what he has to say about Golden Gears.
"My practice is usually film/video based and could be viewed as being an interrogation of the language of popular culture; it’s mannerisms, witticisms, repetitions and……….
……..FOOTBALL!!!"
"For MECA I have taken Edward Elgar, arguably Malvern’s most famous son, and focused upon his love and affection for Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club. It is a little known fact that when not composing, Eddie would cycle all the way to Molyneux to watch his beloved Wolves play. No mean feat in the pre motorway years when a puncture could mean missing out on the pies and the pre match warm up."
Golden Gears takes these elements and works them up into a theatrical fantasy whereby all Ed’s dreams come crashing down, tripped up by attempting to cross the white line where dreams and memories become mangled and the 1974 League Cup winning team of Richards and Dougan is still light years away.
