Paul Conneally, Nikki Pugh |
| Invigilator |
Pugh has completed degrees in both Materials Science and Art and Design and now works as a freelance artist operating across Art, Science, Technology and the gaps between.
|
| Her work usually places an emphasis on process rather than a finished product as she is primarily interested in how people relate to – and interact with - the things around them (physical landscapes, social contexts, objects, other people..). Typically Pugh will instigate a starting point and a mechanism by which participants can then take ownership of the process and steer the direction in which the project goes |
She considers her core materials to be questions and ideas and regards her job as being to ask “what if..?” and then to communicate the results.
Activities are currently being guided by the 8 statements of Counsel for the Artist: |
- Make exchanges with spaces
- Strive to achieve modest connections
- Set your own agenda
- Add to a culture of learning and experimentation
- Get the message across
- Meet a new network
- Resist the ascribed role of witness
- Circumnavigate predictability

| Invigilator |
| The Invigilator series is an ongoing collaboration between Paul Conneally, Nikki Pugh, various locations and the people and objects they come across in the process. It also forms part of Conneally's over-arching Walk to Work series. |
| The sequence "Right, Left, Left, Right, Left, Right, Straight over, Straight over, Straight over, Straight over, Left, Left" is taken from Pugh's journey from her house to where, when the collaboration began, she was working as a gallery invigilator. Invigilator is a series of alternative work shifts performed after transposing this journey onto different locations, usually commencing from the railway station or other point of entry for commuters coming into the town or city. |
| The job of gallery invigilator is distilled into it essence, the simple act of watching over, and yet it is a two-way process involving interaction with the space and the people in it. |
| Or, as Paul put it: |
- the spaces
- transform us
- and in turn
- are transformed
- a process of exchange

| Invigilator: Malvern is the 6th intervention in the invigilator series. Initially comprising of a single invigilator and an assistant documenter, the process has evolved into one that now recruits additional people to participate in the act of watching over and shaping the form of the interventions that take place, seeking to subtlety interact both with the invigilated areas and the spaces between them. |
