Malvern Exhibition of Contemporary Art

Di Cope

Exhibition of BA Final Work BCU 2009
When I consider Nature’s tireless insistence on reclaiming surfaces with minute organic intricacies such as lichen or algae, I am filled with respect for its ingenuity to colonise. This large-scale drawing on collage is a response to my sense of sublime awe when I also consider the vastness of landscape comprising this detail.

‘Drawn from photographs’ could describe how the work is created but this also implies trying to capture photographic likeness. I select my own macro-lens photographs which become new points of reference when they are cut with scissors, out of square format, into stone shapes, away from their original likeness. I scatter them randomly across the surface, colonising the area as nature would. Selecting mainly surface characteristics, I draw out of each one with water-colour washes and fine-line pen. I spontaneously reference archives of my imagination, creating an expression of abstraction on to paper, as Kandinsky may have done.
I believe that by presenting an unframed, unglazed, accessible visual field I endorse the viewer’s own sense of drawing being a natural primary instinct; contemplation at close range may enliven the viewer’s own perception of the complexity of nature.
